Comprehension - Vocabulary - Language in use Notes

Comprehension:

Comprehension is a process of analyzing a passage in such a way that we sponge up all the important points it provides to understand it. This process of aggregating essential points depends on the nature of the passage, how well we use our abilities to grasp the topic by relating it to the experience if we ever had one, regarding what the passage is centered around, or by using our rational thinking, if we do not have experience to relate to the passage, to broaden our understanding. When it comes to the nature of the passage, we will focus on two ways a passage may be presented for comprehension: scientific and analytical. As far as scientific passage is concerned, we are provided with facts, figures, surveys, and results based on experiments. This kind of passage only gives us a limited approach to the subject which can be advantageous for some or baleful for others, based on how we look at it. When we get a passage based on a scientific approach, it paves a path for us to study it by using the data provided for us. Which in one way helps us to strengthen our understanding, because we do not have to worry about the data being baseless. However, if we look at it from a different perspective, it limits our critical thinking when we are limited to taking just one approach to the topic. This brings us to another kind of passage which is based on critical analysis. This kind of passage, unlike scientific, does not give us the data we get in the scientific passage, but we are given logical arguments that help us to understand the passage, while maintaining the flow. These logical arguments are centered around real life examples that help us to relate to the topic, and answer the arguments along the way as we read the passage which provokes our critical thinking.

Vocabulary:

It is a collection of words that make up a language. It is a means of communication at any level whether formal or informal. Vocabulary is formed when people decide to give names to objects, actions, and states on the basis of convention or by relating them to other things that already exist and have names as identity. Subsequently, the generation follows the same trend of making new words and using the words that have already been created by the society. Sometimes people borrow words from other cultures, when they come across something they have never experienced or seen before. As a result, people are forced to use the original names for those things. This may lead to difference in pronunciation due to lack of phonemes in the language of the people those words are migrated to, or it may also lead to difference in spelling due to lack of diacritics in the language they are being adopted in. Sometimes people overlook all these differences and use the same pronunciation and spelling to call those things to make them attractive like Cafe, Coffee, Entrepreneur, Fiancè, or Fiancèe, etc. By and large, these things are what makes vocabulary multifarious in itself and makes new trends as per the conventions of the society.
