Paragraph - Different Writing Styles: Descriptive, Expository, and Narrative Explained - Study24us

Paragraph:

A paragraph is a group of sentences that revolve around a particular topic. There is no specific length of a paragraph, rather it varies from one type of writing to another. A paragraph should begin with an indent and with a thesis statement or topic statement that acts as a base for the whole body of the paragraph. The thesis statement is followed by supporting sentences that further delineate the thesis statement, and these supporting sentences are connected by transition words like moreover, furthermore, in contrast, conversely, however, in any event, in effect, etc. At the end of the paragraph, there is a concluding sentence, which wraps up the whole discussion in a proper way.

Descriptive Writing:

In descriptive writing, an image or depiction of the writing is created in the mind of the reader. Descriptive writing makes use of figures of speech like metaphor, similes, allegory, etc to captivate the audience. Some examples of descriptive writing include: fictional works: dramas, novels, memoirs or biographies, and poetry.

Expository writing:

In this method of writing, the writer explains a topic by citing or quoting facts, figues, and by giving evidence. Personal opinions should be avoided in expository writing. Examples of expository writing are business writing, technical or scientific writing, and news stories.

Narrative Writing:

When information is shared in the context of a story, it is called narrative writing. It contains plot, characters, and setting. Its examples include: historical accounts, short stories, plays and novels.
